The Accused began his official Opening Statement on Wednesday February 14.
During his presentation, he showed the court dozens of photos of innocent civilians killed by the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. He also presented a video documentary which indicated that the alleged massacre of Racak was not a massacre, but the result of a confrontation between government authorities and the Kosovo Llberation Army (KLA).
The video showed the bodies of armed men, lying dead, in and around military vehicles of the KLA and claims that the images in the international media of rows of the unarmed men’s bodies were not the carelessly neglected result of an execution squad, but had instead been carefully placed for identification and removal by a delegation from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
He further claims that there were no forced deportations of Kosovo Albanian civilians. Instead, he contends that the Serbian authorities were engaged in a war against KLA terrorists and that the KLA were terrorising not only Kosovo Serbians, but also Kosovo Albanians and anyone else who disagreed with the KLA fight for an independent Kosovo.
He says that the refugees were not deportees, but were people fleeing, first from the Serbian-KLA War and then from the NATO bombardment. He admitted that there were deportations, however, but said that these were only of KLA separatists, adding that the KLA was supported by al-Qaeda and other Islamic extremists who were backed by Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Turkey.
