UPDATE October 31, 2002

The Israeli Army rolled into the Tulkarem Refugee Camp again today at around 4:45pm. The army is surrounding Tulkarem, just like they surround all Palestinian towns and villages. Every night they come into the camp shooting. "What are they shooting at?" I asked friends I was with in the camp, last night. "No one. The school. Our buildings. It's just a form of terror, and they can do it" was the answer I got.

Today they rolled in early and there was heavy shooting, "by the school" -- we were told. My colleague Heidi and I stopped at the hospital, and Mohammed Damiri (19 years old) had just been brought in. Shot in the the left hip, bullet exited through the right (he has been operated on and at the time of this writing is in stable condition). We decided to make our way to the school. Young boys in the camp were directing us to the area where the military was concentrated. It was a little disconcerting to see people in the streets, children playing, and only a few streets away machine gun fire was ringing out. I stopped to ask Ahmed, who couldn't have been more than 4 years old, to tell the camera what was happening. "Jaish" (Army) he said. "What are they doing?" I asked him. "B'tuckhu" (They're shooting) he replied. "And what are you doing Mohammad?" He was a little embarrassed......He pointed to his home........He was playing in front of his house.
