Prisoners were detained on “suspicion of terrorism” without charges and provided with no legal mechanism for appeal, condemning them to long-term imprisonment9. Even their names were withheld from release. The Bush administration has claimed they are “enemy combatants” 4,8 rather than prisoners of war, and therefore have no
rights to the American legal system4,7. This claim is now being challenged and will be heard in the U.S. Supreme Court 8 in the Spring of 2004.
