Another 26 other Palestinian militants were transported to Gaza, where they received a hero’s welcome. Gaza still awaits Israeli retaliation after last week’s bombing of an Israeli pool hall (Please see “New Bombing in Israel”.)

Upon his release from Ramallah, a Jordanian helicopter flew Palestianian Chairman Yassir Arafat on a tour of other West Bank areas. His own Palestinian helicopters had been destroyed by Israeli forces in December. This was the first time in six months that he had been able to leave Ramallah.

His tour focused on Bethlehem, Nablus and Jenin, where an as yet unknown number of Palestinian civilians were killed. Nablus was also hit heavily and Bethlehem was the site of the siege.

Surrounded by security guards, but with his arms linked with those of Christian clergy, Chairman Arafat entered the grotto of the birthplace of Jesus.

He said, “This place will be always and forever inside our hearts, minds and beliefs."
