A former political columnist for the “LA Weekly”, Marc Haefele, was quoted in the Jan.1 still-independent and fiery “San Francisco Bay Guardian” by Camile Taiara as saying, "The ‘LA Weekly’ to a large extent is being edited under New York oversight at this point." As someone born in the L.A. Area, I can imagine that being controlled from New York would not sit well with L.A. residents.

When the L.A. “New Times” died in October its competitor the “LA Weekly” noted that it cost "the jobs of about 100 employees" at this "journalistic gadfly willing to target sacred cows as it cut an ideologically swerving swath."

Chains like the “New York Times” already control too much of America's daily media by both outright ownership and news services that distribute articles and commentaries around the world. East Coast writers dominate the national press.

”LA Weekly” editor Laurie Ochoa, formerly of “Gourmet” magazine, denies charges
that corporate headquarters influence editorial content. She is quoted in the “Bay Guardian” as saying, "If anything, we've been putting more resources into news coverage. We've increased our national and international coverage, and we're maintaining our local coverage."
