Phillips, a sociology professor at Sonoma State University in Northern California, visited Hawai'i during December and met with journalists in 'Oahu. After his trip he commented on trends in the field: "Though there are still some great newsweeklies, like the ‘San Francisco Bay Guardian’, many today are just sex and food. They are not news-papers in any real sense of the word. News stories and writers are being cut out. It becomes entertainment, rather than news - sex ads and restaurants, with little real news content."
During the Nineteenth Century and much of the Twentieth Century, there were many neighborhood and regional publications that represented diverse views. Such independent publications have gradually been squeezed out by profit-oriented, rather than news-oriented, interests. Ads now dominate the vast amount of space in dailies.
During the l960s I lived in New York City's Greenwich Village and read “The Village Voice” and the “East Village Other”. By the l970s I wrote occasionally for the “Boston Phoenix” and then its competitor “The Real Paper”. “The Village Voice” has evolved into the Village Voice Media, which owns seven alternative papers, including the Los Angeles “LA Weekly”. Phoenix-based New Times Media owns eleven weeklies from Palm Beach, Florida, to San Francisco.
