STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF THOSE GATHERED OUTSIDE RAF FYLINGDALES ON NOVEMBER 20TH 2002
The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Fylingdales Action Network and those gathered at the entrance to Fylingdales today wish to express in the strongest possible terms our opposition to US plans for a missile defence system.
We are greatly concerned at the visit to the base today by General Kadish, head of the missile defence agency, which we see as a clear indication of US progress on missile defence behind the backs of the British people. His visit is evidence that Fylingdales is a key component of US plans for missile defence and we wish to state our utter rejection of any UK involvement in this project.
We are equally concerned at recent statements made by Geoff Hoon, secretary for defence, signalling his support for missile defence in theory. Despite his welcoming of public and parliamentary debate it is clear that he has made his mind up to support US missile defence plans and to offer the use of Fylingdales and Menwith Hill for the system. Mr Hoon is betraying the British public and democracy itself by once again doing the USA’s bidding with little regard for the people of Britain.
