It is difficult to understand how an aggressive war upon Iraq would “secure international peace and security”.
The only unspecified threat in Resolution 1198 was on page 4, paragraph 9, stating that the Security Council “demands that Iraq confirm within seven days ..” from November 8. Iraq confirmed its acceptance yesterday, five days later.
All the war-mongers will now have to reevaluate their position – which was invalid in the first place, since the United Nations had not endorsed a renewed Gulf War.
Of course, the Bush and Blair administrations may continue their aggressive war policies - but not with U.N. approval. A U.N. presence in Iraq may even help to reduce the U.S. – U.K. bombing of Iraq to enforce their so-called “No-Fly Zone” which was also never approved by the U.N.
Since the United States and Great Britain pressured the other Security Council Member-States to pass Resolution 1198, one might think that they will abide by it – but one never knows.
