Ishii was elected from a Tokyo constituency for the first time as a lower house member for the defunct Japan New Party in 1993 and later joined the DPJ. He was serving his third term.

According to the police, Diet members who are not cabinet ministers are not provided with around-the-clock police guard.

The prime minister, the heads of the two houses of the Diet, the chief justice of the Supreme Court, cabinet ministers and top officials of major political parties are provided with a 24-hour police guard outside their homes.

Ishii did not have full-time security, but police officers patrolled the area near his home. He often slept in the Diet members' dormitory rather than at home.

Ishii is the third Diet member to be stabbed to death since the end of World War II.

Inejiro Asanuma, chairman of the disbanded Japan Socialist Party, was assassinated while delivering a speech in Tokyo on Oct 12, 1960.

Former Labor Minister Hyosuke Niwa was stabbed in the neck in Nagoya on Oct 21, 1990 and later died from his wounds. (Kyodo News)
