“Jimmy” Carter’s humanitarian interests have also progressed greatly since 1978 when for the first time in recorded history, 100 Native American Nations united in one common purpose – to stop proposed Congressional legislation (11 Bills) that would abrogate all Treaty rights and deny their status as Nations.
The Longest Walk, as it is called, began on Alcatraz Island, off the coast of California and progressed across the mainland United States to Washington, D.C.
There, the Elders and Spiritual leaders of the Nations requested permission to speak with then President Carter. He was too busy – although the request had been made far in advance.

The then Vice-President, Walter F. Mondale did wave at the Elders and Spiritual Leaders – from a White House window.
This reporter was a very minor participant in The Longest Walk – in New York City and Washington, D.C. – and saw how nicely the Vice-President waved.

Perhaps, now, “Jimmy” Carter may notice the ongoing plight of Native Americans.
