UNRWA Commissioner-General Peter Hansen said that the challenges facing the refugees were immense.
“After 18 months of closure and hardship the recent Israeli invasion has led to large-scale destruction of shelters, water supplies, electricity lines and sewage lines,” adding, “There has been a wholesale destruction of civic infrastructure with the result that a large portion of the refugee population finds itself without the basic services and means of support for the minimum standards of life. The refugees urgently need the support of the international community.”
The recent Israeli military action and restrictions have not only hampered relief agencies in their humanitarian efforts, but has also caused them to diminish already overstretched existing resources to tend to the wounded and supply food, medicine and water to areas affected by the military incursions.
Additional funds are now urgently needed to replenish food and medecine stocks for the long-term care of Palestinian refugees.
The United Arab Emirates has said it will finance the rebuilding of the camp infrastructure and 800 shelters destroyed in the Jenin refugee camp. Other nations have also begun to assist.
A U.N school for the blind in Gaza was hit by Israeli air strikes, March 6 and Japan, which partially funded the original construction, has recently begun its reconstruction.
