The 400,000 Israelis who demonstrated in Tel Aviv are to be commended. In Israel at least there was an enquiry into the massacre by the Kahan Commission. The Lebanese investigative judge Germanos, to his shame, could not even determine the identity of the Lebanese perpetrators.

The conclusions of the Kahan Commission did not lead to justice for the victims. Ariel Sharon was held merely "indirectly responsible" and therefore considered unfit to be minister of Defense. But does this make him fit to be Prime Minister of Israel? How does the Israeli Supreme Court explain this? Last week, in the absence of his minister of Defense, who was in France, Ariel Sharon again became minister of Defense for a while.

For the victims there seems to be no justice.
