John Allen Muhammad is a former U.S. Army soldier and Gulf War veteran who at one time was stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington State. Some speculate that his experiences in the Gulf War might have been a reason behind the anti-American sentiment the man allegedly has.

Muhammad was formerly known as John Allen Williams before he converted to Islam, local police sources here say.

The local media tried to link the case to the September 11 attacks, saying that Muhammad and his stepson, Lee Malvo, may have been motivated by anti-U.S. sentiment in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, according to the Seattle Times.

But Police is yet to officially comment on any possible motivation for the attacks.
