The unfair distribution of water resources is a political, economic, technological and social challenge, he said, calling states, NGOs and citizens to work for securing enough water resources for the growing world population.

The involvement of the IAEA in this conference has to do with a proposal to use nuclear power for water desalination. The IAEA was originally founded by the United Nations because it was felt that an international authority could best protect us from the dangers of nuclear power. Chernobyl, Three-Mile Island and the proliferation of nuclear weapons attest to the IAEA’s success.
Water desalination through nuclear energy is thought of as a realistic option by many participants even though other researchers have shown that a solar plant in the Sahara Desert would provide enough electricity to serve the entire planet.
