Jake Parker: Alleviating Pain by ‘Kicking a Habit’
Iraqi Solidarity News (Al-Thawra)

The United Nation’s Integrated Regional Information Network (IRIN), recently published an article on a 33 year old Iraqi mother, who as a result of the conflict has been unable to obtain the medicine, to prevent “serious bouts of epilepsy-induced convulsions”, that her two year old son Omar is suffering.

In the article Omar’s’ mother explained; "I don’t know what else to do to get help for my son. I can’t buy the tablets from private pharmacies, which sell 10 tablets for nearly US $10. This money’s enough for my family to eat for the whole week. But I don’t want my son to die from a condition that can be simply treated.”

Martha Paisi is a Postgraduate student in Islamic studies and is currently based in Scotland. Martha is giving up chocolate as part of “Kick A Habit”, where she aims to help raise money for the Human Relief Foundation and Medical Aid for Iraqi Children.

Martha recently joined the Iraq Solidarity Campaign and will be working with other dynamic young people, when she joins the Step in the Right Direction project this summer at the An-Najah University in Nablus, Palestine.

Speaking of her motives for joining Kick A Habit, Martha explained that “So many innocents are dying everyday in every corner of this world, so many rights have been violated and yet we remain silent“

“Children have been proven repeatedly to be the ‘silent victims’ of these atrocities...which unfortunately are the products of human manipulation.”

“It is my hope that one day we will all be able to work together for a better future and for a better humanity, till then, we can make a difference today. By ‘Kicking a habit’ only we can offer these people a hand of humanity, we can offer these children a branch of hope…This is the least we can do.”

Acknowledging “the track record of achievements of the Iraq Solidarity Campaign and Middle East Cultural Association in alleviating the suffering of countless people and especially children in the Middle East, I chose to participate in this campaign confident that the money raised would be directed to those who are in most urgent need.”

“In this way, I choose to express my solidarity to all those people who unlike us, are striving to meet even their basic survival needs.”

As Gabriela Mistral stated (1948), “We are guilty of many errors and many faults, but our worst crime is abandoning the children, neglecting the foundation of life. Many of the things we need can wait. The child cannot. Right now is the time his bones are being formed, his blood is being made and his senses are being developed. To him we cannot answer 'Tomorrow'. His name is 'Today'.”

All proceeds raised from Kick A Habit will be divided between Medical Aid for Iraqi Children and the Human Relief Foundation. Both are British based Charities which have operated inside of Iraq for over ten years and together have provided much needed assistance to families, medical facilities and schools.
