The accused has responded by saying that the entire break-up of Yugoslavia and the subsequent wars and horrors are all the fault of a Western plan to eliminate Yugoslavia as an opponent of global Capitalism, to destroy Serbian independence and to colonise the Balkans.

Mr. Milosovic sees the ICTY as simply a tool of the West and an illegal creation of the U.N. Security Council. He is also calling for a War Crimes Indictment of NATO, particularly the United States, Great Britain and Germany.

ICTY Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte has said that her office has already considered such an Indictment, but after investigating the matter, found no evidence of war crimes. Perhaps, in future, this may change and the testimony and evidence of Mr. Milosovic may warrant a reopening of the matter, but this remains to be seen.

Should he prove successful in this endeavor, however, an Indictment against the Western powers would have little bearing on his own predicament. Whatever the future may hold, Slobodan Milosovic is now on trial for crimes against humanity, murder and genocide and if the charges are proven, he faces Life Imprisonment.

The guilt or innocence of the West, while perhaps providing mitigating circumstances, is no excuse for the atrocities committed during the Bosnian, Croatian and Kosovo wars. If Slobodan Milosovic is proven responsible, he will be found Guilty and sentenced to prison.
