The Show Goes On, a comment by Paul V. Rafferty
In the interests of World Theatre, we thought we should give some attention to the recent performance by Russia’s President Putin in Munich and the response by the U.S. Pentagon chief, Robert Gates.
Were it true Greek Theatre, we might hear a chorus of the Chechnyan dead and wounded moaning in the background, but this is not Classical Theare. It is more the Theatre of the Absurd.
While one cannot help agreeing with some of President Putin’s charges, one also wonders at his audacity.
The debacle in Chechnya continues, uncriticised by the “international Community” – whatever that means – and the mysteries of the Moscow bombing go unanswered, among others. Nevertheless, President Putin felt it his duty to point out the “recklessness” of the United States.
Mr. Gates, responded well, comparing President Putin’s remarks to old “Cold War” rhetoric.
For those who don’t remember, the “Cold War” was the time when most people were afraid of a major war between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R., so the two countries divided most of the world into their two camps.
Now, while Presiden Putin went to the Middle East, Mr. Gates then proceded on his mission to gain support for the subjugation of Afghanistan.
The Soviet Union failed to accomplish this – as had the formidable British Empire, in the past.
Back in 1979 - 80, when I was first working at the U.N., I attended conferences given by Russian and American scientists. The purpose of the conferences was to explain how they were working together in the field of Magneto-hydrodynamics.
Magneto-hydrodynamics was considered the key to combining Laser and Particle Beam Technologies. In so doing, they could improve their weapons systems - together.
Russian scientists were working with their American colleagues, in the Chicago suburbs and American scientists were working with their Soviet colleagues, outside of Kiev.
This was but one example. The entire “Cold War” was a “Game”.
Nevertheless, once again, we’re led to believe that Russia and America aren’t working together.
“The show must go on.”

For three years before his death from poisoning, former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko had been making a documentary with his friend Andrei Nekrasov about authoritarianism in post-communist Russia. Here is that film, the unexpected ending of which made world headlines at the end of 2006.
