He received 89% of the vote of an electoral college of approximately 5,000 federal and state legislators.

Although the post is largely ceremonial – its primary function being the choice of the central government if there is no clear general election victory – the personality of the President can often set a tone for national policy.

He will be hard-pressed, however, to restore peace and harmony throughout India and in India’s relations with Pakistan.
There has been violent Hindhu-Muslim conflict in the Western state of Gujarat, Hindhu – Christian conflicts in some parts of the country and the territorial dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir which has exploited local religious differences.

The influence of the Muslim Fundamentalist Al-Qaeda on Pakistan adds to an already volatile situation and the fact that both Pakistan and India are nuclear powers makes the need for an accomplished diplomat essential.
Perhaps, the man who helped fuel the conflict by his development of nuclear power may also see a way to defuse the situation.

All the world hopes for his success !
