But religion can also be inspiring. Remembering his mother, Moore notes that she was forever quoting the passage from Matthew 25 which says that we shall be judged by how we treat the least among us. "I think about that a lot," he says. "It informs a lot of what I do, and it challenges me to correct the things I do that aren't right. And to ask myself constantly, am I giving enough, doing enough?

"Cos without any sort of plan or design, I've ended up with this incredible success, and with that comes money. So what do I do with the money? Cos I don't really want it. I mean, I want what you want - a nice place to live, a car, a vacation every now and then. But once you've done all that, what do you want the money for? What's it for?

"So, y'know, I give a lot of it away, or I put it into work that I know, at least at first, people aren't going to fund. I use it to keep the work going. But, yeah, I believe in that passage very strongly and I reflect on it often."

Money is something that Moore has taken flak for in the press: he lives with his wife and daughter in a $1.9 Million home in Manhattan, what does he know about the minimum wage?

"A penthouse," he corrects me, gleefully. "I've read that I live in a Fifth Avenue penthouse. But I've never lived in a penthouse."
