Moore was born in Flint, Michigan in 1954. It was a blue-collar upbringing,
"just people who watch a lot of TV and eat all the wrong foods", not particularly political. "I mean it was political in the sense that my parents paid attention, they read the papers, they watched the news, they discussed the candidates, they always voted. My mom was very tuned into what was going on in the world. She took us kids to Washington DC, to New York, to other places that would open our minds a bit."

Does he remember the first time he felt a sense of injustice? "It was Holy Thursday, April 4, 1968. I was coming out of Mass, I was 13 years old, and one of the fathers, the dads, went to warm the car cos it was cold. He turned the car on, and the radio was on: Martin Luther King has been assassinated. He shouts out to the people coming out of the church: 'They've just killed Martin Luther King!' And a cheer goes up. I'm 13 and I'm watching this and I can't ..."

He trails off, despairingly. "The feeling of repulsion I had sticks with me to this day."
