"It so bothered me when I went down there. I couldn't work on my film for a week because I was afraid to take it in the direction I wanted, which was what I said to you earlier about [America being] a country that won't provide a doctor for its own children." Finally, he says what he wants to say: "I found it too hard to face this kernel of our soul, which is: do we hate our children? Especially the yuppies, the baby boomers now that have their kids. Are kids just a necessary nuisance to us? We work 12 hour days, we get home in time to put them to bed, we don't spend the time with them that was spent with us.

"What parent wouldn't risk their own life for their child's life? And police who are paid to do this, who have sworn to do it, who are wearing armour from head to toe. There's just two punks in there, who aren't very good shots. Nine hundred rounds, 37 hits. That's pretty bad. That's the new British Olympic shooting team."

This last is a joke. Moore can't help himself. But both of us know that he's just said something spectacularly ungenerous about the victims' families. He'd say he's just doing what he always does, exploring America's eldritch underbelly, but I'm not so sure. I think maybe he's spent so long grubbing around down there that he finds it hard to see the good in people.
