BEIJING — North Korea's official media on Friday accused Japan of blindly following the United States in taking an antagonistic policy toward North Korea, calling the Japanese pro-U.S. stance a "suicidal act."
"It is like poking one's eyes with one's own hands," the official Rodong Sinmum daily said in a commentary.
The commentary, transmitted by the official Korean Central News Agency, criticized "pro-U.S. conservative forces in Japan" for sabotaging agreements reached between North Korea and Japan during Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's visit to Pyongyang last September.
Referring to a joint declaration issued by Koizumi and North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in Pyongyang, the Rodong Sinmum commentary said, "bowing to U.S. pressure, pro-U.S. conservative forces in Japan are trying to block implementation of the Pyongyang declaration."
The commentary singled out North Korea's official acknowledgment on the abduction of Japanese nationals, which it said should have "virtually resolved the issue."
"Instead, Japan has put forward unjustified demands, which serve nothing to further mutual trust and bilateral relations," the commentary said. (Kyodo News)
