Thoughts of Christmas 2002

Very many years ago, a miraculous birth took place; a Jewish Child, of royal lineage, was born in the town of Bethlehem, the “House of Peace”. That child grew into the man whom Christians call “the Christ”, a Greek word for “the Anointed” or “the Messiah”.

Christians – and some Hindhus – regard him as an Avatar or “God-Man on Earth”. Muslims call him “Prophet” and many believe, as Christians do, that one day, he will return to Earth to set things right.

Others regard him as a great teacher, a wise man and/or a revolutionary.

Few, however, bother to heed his words.

He often quoted from sacred Jewish Scriptures and summed up the essence of their teachings, by quoting from the Books of Deuteronomy and Leviticus. He called these “the greatest Commandments” or “The Great Law”:

“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind…”
and
“Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself.”
