Hypocrisy Reigns at the White House and U.N., by Paul V. Rafferty

Article image U.S. President Bush continues to menace Iraq with the threat of all-out war, instead of the bombing that continues after the Gulf War. He also calls upon the U.N. Inspectors to “get tougher” and to even kidnap Iraqi scientists. All this, in the name of “Peace” and an end to the fear of weapons of mass destruction.
This from the President of the nation with the planet’s largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction.

Meanwhile, on Friday, the United States vetoed a possible Security Council Resolution against Israel for recent actions, including the killing of several United Nations aid workers.

The draft included a demand that Israel comply fully with its obligations under the Fourth Geneva Convention regarding the Protection of Civilians in Time of War, and
"refrain from the excessive and disproportionate use of force in the Occupied Palestinian Territory."

Not exactly a severe censure.
Israel also possesses weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear, chemical and biological weapons – but this does not seem to matter to the White House. It seems that neither Israel nor the United States pose a threat to world peace. An interesting premise.

On another front, the U.S. blocked an international agreement to allow poorer countries to import low cost drugs. The wording of the agreement is too “vague” and pharmaceutical companies might object. Negotiations are expected to resume in January.

The United States, however, did endorse one Security Council measure, on Friday and allow it to go through – unanimously!
