Editorial Introduction
Vice is a useful tool for any repressive regime,
Those who are addicted either psychologically or physically to various substances or practices become more concerned with their demanding habits than with the world around them. Alcoholics, drug abusers and sexual obsessives have little concern with political life and the decisions being made by others – except when it affects their particular delusion.
Illegal vice has another added benefit for the State, since authorities can periodically “clamp down” on addicts by selectively using “The Law” to imprison offenders and impress the general public by its “righteous” moral stance. By targetting only addicts and allowing the suppliers to continue their trade, the situation is allowed to continue and greater police measures are “justified” by the general public.
While eroticism may be an art form and in some cultures may even have metaphysical connotations, pornography is simply the degradation of sexual activity. It forms part of the proof of Western decadence, for no longer is the sexual act considered an expression of love, but merely another form of self-gratification. Nevertheless, those who participate in pornography - either actively or as voyeurs – are more to be pitied than condemned.
