The U.S and British warplanes on Tuesday violated Iraq’s airspace and attacked residential areas in the city of Kut in Wassit province. The attack left one citizen wounded, and caused serious destruction in two residential houses.
A spokesman for Iraqi Air Defense Command told INA “At 1030hr on Tuesday, the U.S and British warplanes, supported by an AWACS, carried out 27 sorties from bases in Kuwait. The warplanes attacked residential areas in the city of Kut in Wassit province. The attack left one citizen wounded, and caused serious destruction in two residential houses. The warplanes flew over areas of Artawi, Bissiya, Jeleba, Nassiriya, Rafa’I, Qala’at Suker, Alhay, Kut, Ali el-Garbi, Amara, Nakheeb, Taqtaqana, Najaf and Hashimiya.”
“Iraqi missile force and anti-aircraft artillery drove the enemy planes back to their bases in Kuwait”, the spokesman added.
Since December 17, 1998 up to October 15, 2002, the U.S and British warplanes carried out a total of 43,669 sorties from Saudi, Kuwaiti and Turkish airspace, of which 16,581 sorties from Kuwaiti airspace
