ICRC President Visits Israel and Occupied/Autonomous Territories of Palestine

Article image Geneva (ICRC) – A steadily worsening situation, characterized by disregard for the principles of international humanitarian law, and the resulting scale of the ICRC's operation in Israel and the occupied and autonomous territories have
prompted Mr Jakob Kellenberger, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, to embark on a trip to the area.

During his six-day official visit, Mr Kellenberger will convey the ICRC's humanitarian concern to the Israeli and Palestinian officials he meets and will seek a clear commitment to sparing civilian life and property. He will remind all sides of their obligation to respect the provisions and principles of international humanitarian law.
In the course of his visit, Mr Kellenberger is scheduled to meet the Israeli President Moshe Katsav, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, and the Chairman of the Palestinian Authority,Yasser Arafat. He will have talks with other key civilian and military leaders, both in Israel and in the occupied and autonomous territories.
