Former Serbian Official Changes Plea to ‘Guilty’ for War Crimes During Bosnian War.

Biljana Plavsic, former President of Republika Srpska, the self-proclaimed Serbian Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina, changed her plea to Guilty, today, to Count 3 of an Indictment filed by the Office of the Prosecion of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). She had previously pleaded “Not Guilty” on all counts.

In return, according to the Plea Agreement, the prosecution agrees to move to have all other charges dismissed. These include: Genocide, Complicity in Genocide Extermination and killing, Deportation and Inhumane Acts.

Mrs. Plavsic pleaded Guilty to “Count 3: Persecutions on political, racial and religious grounds, a CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY, punishable under Articles 5(b) and 7(1) of the Statute of the Tribunal.”

In a statement, read on her behalf, Defense Counsel Eugene O’Sullivan said:

“By accepting responsibility and expressing her remorse fully and unconditionally, Mrs. Plavsic hopes to offer some consolation to the innocent victims – Muslim, Croat and Serb – of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mrs. Plavsic invites others, especially leaders, on any side of the conflict, to examine themselves and their own conduct.
