This past weekend, on Sunday, the United States observed Memorial Day, a day set aside to remember and honor those who died in the nation’s many wars.
According to its Constitution, the legal document that is binding upon all U.S. Americans, the United States is a secular entity. Nevertheless, there are those who would impose a particular religion, Christianity, upon the nation.
Since within the many diverse Christian communities, this past Sunday was also “Pentecost Sunday”, considered to be the “Birthday of the Church”, one might think that the convergence of the two holidays might cause those who consider themselves both Christian and American to contemplate the inherent contradiction in being Christian in such a militaristic nation.
We certainly hope so.
