Iraqis Beautify "Ugly" Sectarian Walls

Article image BAGHDAD — Instead of the graffiti and political street art that once daubed the Berlin Wall and now scrawled across the Israeli separation wall, the Iraqi government has paid the most-talented Iraqi artists to turn the ugly sectarian barriers into a masterpiece by capturing the overlooked natural beauty of the country.

These works "have given them (Iraqis) a sense of delight, instead of the cement blocks that used to cause suffocation," artist Mohammed Dokhan, 33, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) Sunday, April 29.

"Even during working days, people stop to gaze" at the paintings, he added.

The 50 artists captured the country's overlooked natural beauty with pastoral scenes of vast alluvial marshes in the south, green mountains in the north and the breathtaking wetlands.

The paintings also reflect Iraqi history, ranging from the historical images from the era of the ancient Babylonian King Hammurabi to scenes of ancient Sumerians.
