Humanitarian Aid To Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran
The European Commission has decided to grant humanitarian aid of 18 Million Euros to people affected by armed conflicts and natural disasters in regions of Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. The funding will benefit returning refugees, displaced people and their host communities.
Humanitarian needs remain acute, since 2006 was a year of severe drought and increased military conflict which affected civilians and relief workers.
Relief will be provided for the return and integration of refugees coming from Iran and Pakistan and their host communities.
Activities will include improving the access to drinking water and sanitation, as well as providing shelter and supplying food security.
Because of the continued insecurity throughout the country, provision of air transport will be maintained.
Sixty Million Euro Aid To Sudan and Chad
The European Commission has decided on two large-scale aid plans of sixty million Euros for Sudan and Chad.
The forty-five million Euro plan is intended for Darfur and South Sudan.
The fifteen million Euro plan is for Chad and is focused on assistance for refugees in the east and south of Chad.
The main humanitarian concern of the European Union is the conflict in Darfur. About four million people are affected and another two million are displaced. 230,000 of them have sought refuge in Chad.
On the other hand, because of the spill-over of the fighting into Chad, thousands of Chadians have crossed the border in the other direction and are refugees in Darfur.
There is major concern over the increasing difficulty in implementing relief efforts.
Beyond the Darfur crisis, the global plans for Sudan and Chad cover the humanitarian needs of refugees in South Sudan as well as 48,000 refugees from the Central African Republic that are living in camps in southern Chad.
