JAKARTA — A new powerful earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Tuesday, March 6, killing at least 82 people and flattening homes, leaving residents trapping under rubble.

"The toll won't stop rising because the quake happened in a relatively populated region", Damien Personnaz, a UNICEF spokesman, told Agence France Presse (AFP).

He put the death toll from the quake at 82, adding that two UNICEF teams are in Sumatra monitoring the situation.

Local officials are talking about a growing number of victims in quake-hit area.

"There are hundreds of victims," said the mayor of Solok, a rice-farming area home to about 50,000 people close to the epicenter.
