Washington
Designer coats that were bought by the Human Society of the United States were found trimmed with fur from domestic dogs, although the fur was advertised as fake.
Members of the American Congress Jim Moran, Democrat from Virginia and Michael Ferguson, Republican from New Jersey, introduced a bill to protect consumers and animals from the fur trade.
The Dog and Cat Prohibition Enforcement Act would stop the sale of fur from Raccoon Dogs and would also require that all fur garments be labelled, regardless of their value.
Half of the fur garments that are imported to the United States were imported from China.
In 2000, the import of domestic dog and cat fur was outlawed.
The newly introduced bill will protect Raccoon Dogs and will support the ban on selling dog and cat furs, by discouraging manufacturers that think they can slip onto unlabeled jackets.
The bill will also require that garments will be labelled and by this, close the loophole.
Raccoon Dogs look like oversized, fluffy raccoons and are not usually kept as pets.
It is not considered as illegal to import their furs to the United States but legal experts say that they are still a type of dog.
The facts came to light after investigators of the Human Society of America received a tip from consumers who bought coats with trimmed labels a faux fur that felt real.
This is an industry wide deception, say industry experts.
Among the upscale designers are Nordstrom, Tommy Hilfiger, as well as Neiman Marcus.com and others.
Some retailers have pulled the coats from the shelves.
