Israel Rafalovich: Emergency Aid to Mozambique

The European Commission has decided to grant Mozambique emergency aid to help flood victims.

Torrential rains have seriously affected people in four Southern African countries, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, with Mozambique hit the worst.

Dozens have been killed, and thousands made homeless while crops have been severely damaged.

In the Zambezi river valley, in central Mozambique, about sixty thousand people have been evacuated.

An emergency expert from the European Commission is on the ground in the affected region and is currently assessing the basic needs of flood victims. The main objective is to ensure that flood victims are resettled in safer areas.

The rainy season in Mozambique usually lasts until the end of March but rainfalls recorded recently, and believed to be influenced by the El Nino effect, have been especially high.
