Washington, D.C.
The Education for Peace in Iraq Center (EPIC) welcomes President Bush’s pledge of $18 million to assist Iraq’s displaced populations. However, given the role that the U.S. has played in helping to create the crisis, EPIC maintains that the U.S. must do more.
Iraq’s displacement crisis is quickly spiraling out of control. To date 2 million people have left the country, while another 500,000 have relocated within its borders. In early January, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) issued an emergency appeal for $60 million to fund its work for the next 12 months. Given the size and growth of the crisis, this amount is only a fraction of what is needed to effectively address it. By contributing only $18 million, the U.S. will provide a minimal source of aid.
EPIC calls on Congress and the administration to ensure that the U.S. covers at least 50% of the funding needed for international relief operations.
