Breakthrough at Bonn meeting for the provision of continuous seismic coverage to detect tsunamis in Europe
Italy has announced that it will provide non-stop processing and coverage of seismic data in the seas around Europe. This data is essential for the detection of earthquakes that potentially generate tsunamis, and could significantly boost protection of Europe’s heavily developed and populated coastlines.
The announcement was made at the 3rd Meeting of the Intergovernmental Co-ordination Group for the North-East Atlantic, the Mediterranean and Connected Seas Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (NEAMTWS). The meeting, which was organized by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), met in Bonn (Germany) this week (7-9 February).
The data will be provided by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), one of Europe’s largest research institutions in the field of geophysics, seismology and vulcanology. The INGV will thus serve as the system’s first hub for immediate data delivery and dissemination.
