Brussels

During the International Donor Conference on Support To Lebanon that took place on Thursday in Paris, the European Commission will presented a new assistance package that will bring the total E.U. contribution, since the conflict, to about five hundred Million Euros.

The new package will cover the period until 2010 and it will provide assistance that will lay the groundwork for long tem recovery through support for crucial political and economic reforms.

The assistance which totals three hundred million Euros is focused initially on support for social and economic as well as political reforms.

It also includes provisions for economic recovery of Lebanon, de-mining and clearance of unexploded ordnance as well as assistance for the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.

There is also macro-financial assistance that will provide grants and loans.

The European Investment Bank will give grants and loans to mobilise additional funds from the Bank, that will fund private sector industry activities, tourism, information technology services, as well health and education. Lebanon will be eligible to draw funds from the newly created Investment Fund.

The action plan sets out a set of priorities for joint work by the European Union and the Lebanese government at the political, economic, social and cultural levels.
