Iraq remains in crisis: UNHCR’s response

UNHCR officials recently visited Iraq and reported that there are at least 1.6 million Iraqis displaced internally, and up to 1.8 million outside the country in neighbouring states. In light of the dire security situation, the UNHCR recommends to all states that Iraqi asylum seekers from Southern and Central Iraq should be favourably considered as refugees under the 1951 Refugee Convention given the high prevalence of serious human rights violations. Moreover, the UN Refugee Agency has launched an appeal to fund its work over the next 12 months for those refugees and internally displaced people affected by the conflict in Iraq.
