The Rio Conventions Exhibit at the Earth Summit

"Rio Conventions: synergy for sustainable development" - this is the theme of a joint exhibit at the Ubuntu Village at WSSD in Johannesburg, organized by the secretariats of the biodiversity, desertification and climate change conventions.

This exhibit portrays how the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Convention to Combat Desertification and the Convention on Climate Change provide synergy for sustainable development. Since their beginnings at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, the three conventions have addressed the complex interactions among human and natural systems while focusing on different aspects of the same challenge - how to ensure the sustainable exploitation of the earth's resources. The international community is working through these conventions to promote economic and social development while preserving our living and non-living environment. Together the Rio Conventions offer a sound platform for promoting sustainable development over the coming decades, with their focus on partnerships and development of synergies. Accelerating action under these three agreements will go a long way towards meeting the goals set by the Johannesburg Summit.
