Israel Rafalovich: Far-Right Group in European Parliament

Brussels

A far-right political group is in the making in the European Parliament and will be presented in the coming week during the plenary session in Strasbourg.

It is expected that the new group will have the name “Europe of the Fatherlands” or “Identity”, “Sovereignty”, “Tradition”.

The new group brings together twenty members of the European Parliament from six countries and will include members from the new member states of the European Union, Bulgaria and Romania.

Bulgaria has one and Romania has five far-right members of the European Parliament.

It is also expected that Alessandra Mussolini, the granddaughter of Benito Mussolini, and the Polish ultra-Catholic League of Polish Families will join the group.

Also the Austrian Freedom Party and the Flemish nationalist party Vlaams Belang from Belgium, as well as Ashley Mote of the United Kingdom, will join the new far-right group.

The new group is set to be led by Mr. Bruno Gollnisch, a member of the European Parliament from France who is deputy leader of Jean-Marie Le Pen's National Front. Mr. Gollnisch is waiting for a verdict on charges of questioning the Holocaust.

Mr. Dimitri Stoyanov, the up-coming Bulgarian MEP circulated last year derogatory E-Mail in the European Parliament about Gypsies and Mr. Cornelio Vadim Tudor from the Greater Romanian party is known for his racist tones.

Establishing a parliamentary group will make it possible for them to have access to more funding and positions that might strengthen their stance.

The new parliamentary group is expected to support the freeze of further European Union enlargement and resist the attempts to revive the E.U. constitution.
