Asha-Rose Migiro Named Highest Ranking Woman at United Nations

Tanzanian Foreign Minister and co-founder of FEMACT (Feminist Activist Coalition), Asha-Rose Migiro was offered and accepted the post of U.N. Deputy Secretary General. Dr. Migiro is the second woman in the history of the United Nations to hold this position and is now the highest ranking woman at the U.N. and the second highest among all officials.

Dr. Migiro’s appointment has been called a “score for East Africa and the women’s fraternity” by the Kenya London News and President of Tanzania, Jakaya Kikwete, stated he was happy and proud that Tanzania had been given this opportunity to serve in the world’s highest body. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has described her as a highly respected leader who has championed the cause of developing countries over the years and stated that he has deep confidence in and respect for her. Secretary General Ban is reported to have met Dr. Migiro a year ago in Tanzania while campaigning for the position of U.N. Secretary General.

The post of U.N. Deputy Secretary General was established by the General Assembly in 1997 as part of United Nations reform. The DSG is expected to manage Secretariat operations and ensure coherence of activities and programs. The first appointed to this position in 1998 was a woman, Louise Frechette, former Deputy Minister of National Defense of Canada (named one of Forbes 100 most powerful women in politics in 2005), who would later resign during the Oil for Food investigations. Louise Frechette was followed by former World Bank Vice President for External Affairs, Mark Malloch Brown of Great Britain.
