Greenpeace Statement on Chlorine Leak at Missouri Plant,
by Lisa Finaldi,
Greenpeace Toxics Campaign Coordinator.
What's most frightening about the chlorine accident today (August 14) at the DPC Enterprises facility in Festus, Missouri is that it's not out of the ordinary for the chemical industry. A government study has shown that approximately 60,000 commercial chemical accidents occur every year, killing more than 250 people annually. That's why we need to move toward the use of inherently safer materials and eliminate extremely toxic substance such as chlorine. Now more than ever, with the threat of terrorism in our own backyard, eliminating toxic substances is a matter of urgency."
Maybe this accident will be a wakeup call for Missouri Senator Kit Bond when he returns to Washington. He has been more interested in curbing the public's right to know on risks posed to people living near chemical plants, rather than supporting positive action towards the use of safer materials.
