INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ABOLITION OF SLAVERY

On 2 December, the world marks International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. Yet at least 12 million people are enslaved worldwide. Even though it is illegal under international law, slavery is found in most countries and no region is free from this abuse.

The 2006 Anti-Slavery Award winner, Sudanese activist James Aguer, declared "slavery is an inhuman and degrading practice which must not be allowed to persist in the 21 st century.
