E.U. Boost's ICT Research, notes Israel Rafalovich

Brussels - The European Union intends to invest nine Billion Euro in research on information and communications technologies (ICTs), until the year 2013.

The money for this program will come out of the research budget of the European Union which over this period will total more than fifty Billion Euro.

This is by far the largest single budget item in Europe's 7th research framework programme.

The ICT research programme for 2007-2008, will streamline a new generation of ICT projects that will raise the European research performance and will keep the European ICT sector at the forefront of technology development and advanced ICT use.

This figure underlines the European Unions determination to close the gap in the area of research between Europe and its other competitors.

But the gap is closing. Research in 2006 of the top 1250 research and development companies in the world showed that 39 of the top one hundred were U.S. companies and 36 were European, which underlines that Europe is catching up.

To discuss the new research programme, as well as strategic priorities, about 3,500 of the European research community attended a special conference in Helsinki, last week, to deal with the subject, focusing on key areas where Europe has the competitive edge, such as communications, electronics and photonics, and software systems and architecture.
