Gaza: U.N. General Assembly Votes For Peace

The U.N. General Assembly 10th Emergency Special Session yielded 156 votes in favor of a resolution calling for Israel to immediately halt its military operations and pull its troops out of Gaza. There were 7 votes against the resolution, including the U.S., Israel and Australia with 6 abstentions.(1)

Masood Haider of The Dawn and President of the United Nations Correspondents Association reported that the call for a U.N. inquiry into the attack delayed Assembly action for hours, as the U.N. body's budget committee debated whether the effort would duplicate a similar mission ordered by the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. In the end, the budget committee approved the new panel's estimated $130,000 budget by a vote of 143-5 with two abstentions.

Revealing a taste for riddles, U.S. ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton quipped: “What about the fact-finding mission that the Human Rights Council has agreed to? How many fact-finding missions does it take to screw in a light bulb?"

I suppose we’ll have an answer to that soon enough.
