The U.S. Vetoes U.N. Draft Resolution on Situation in Gaza

Saturday afternoon, November 11, 2006, the United States blocked a Security Council draft resolution calling for a United Nations fact-finding mission in response to the Israeli military operation in Gaza last week. The draft resolution won the endorsement of 10 other members.

The vote was held following a joint call by The Arab League, The Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Non-Aligned Movement for a debate in the Security Council in response to the recent Israeli military operation in Gaza.

The Israeli authorities called the incident a “mistake” and stated they intended to conduct a full investigation. Riyad H. Mansour, The Permanent Observer of the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the United Nations, urged that the perpetrators be held accountable under international law and declared the Israeli military operation “State terrorism.”
