Abe Becomes Prime Minister; Names Cabinet
TOKYO — Shinzo Abe was elected Japan's youngest postwar prime minister in a parliamentary vote Tuesday and named his new cabinet, retaining Foreign Minister Taro Aso and appointing Liberal Democratic Party veteran lawmaker Fumio Kyuma as Defense Agency chief.
Abe garnered 339 of the 476 votes cast in the House of Representatives vote while main opposition Democratic Party of Japan President Ichiro Ozawa took 115 votes.
Abe, a 52-year-old conservative hawk who became Liberal Democratic Party leader last week, also named close ally Yasuhisa Shiozaki, 55, who was senior vice foreign minister, as chief cabinet secretary and minister in charge of the issue of North Korea's abductions of Japanese nationals.
