23 August: International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition

The night of 22 to 23 August 1791, in Santo Domingo (today Haiti and the Dominican Republic) saw the beginning of the uprising that would play a crucial role in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.

International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is intended to inscribe the tragedy of the transatlantic slave trade in the memory of all peoples. In accordance with the goals of the intercultural project "The Slave Route", it should offer an opportunity for collective consideration of the historic causes, the methods and the consequences of this tragedy, and for an analysis of the interactions to which it has given rise between Africa, Europe, the Americas and the Caribbean.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE ON INTERNATIONAL SLAVERY DAY
On 23 August, the world marks International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.

Today, at least 12 million men, women and children are in slavery throughout the world. Entire families are bonded into agricultural labour in India, in Niger people are born into an accepted slave class where they will spend their lives in servitude and in the United Kingdom people are trafficked into sexual exploitation and forced labour.

During the 18th century campaign against the Transatlantic Slave Trade, more than 350,000 people signed petitions demanding an end to this inhuman practice. Today, you can seize the abolitionist spirit and sign our Fight for Freedom 1807-2007 declaration demanding an end to slavery once and for all and action to address the lasting legacies of the slave trade.
