Sixtieth Anniversary of the International Court of Justice

Article image A solemn commemorative sitting will be held on Wednesday 12 April 2006, in the Peace Palace in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen of the Netherlands, the United Nations Secretary-General and the President of the United Nations General Assembly
The ceremony will take place in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen of the Netherlands, the United Nations Secretary-General. Mr. Kofi Annan, and the President of the Sixtieth Session of the General Assembly, Mr. Jan Eliasson.

Speeches will be delivered by Judge Rosalyn Higgins, President of the Court, Mr. Annan and Mr. Eliasson, as well as by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Mr. Bernard R. Bot.

Judge Bruno Simma will present a summary of the conclusions of the colloquium which the Court is to organize at the Peace Palace in co-operation with UNITAR (United Nations Institute for Training and Research) on 10 and 11 April 2006 to mark its jubilee.
Historical Background T
he Charter of the United Nations and the Statute of the International Court of Justice, an integral part of the former, were signed in San Francisco on 26 June 1945. They came into force on 24 October 1945. The first Members of the Court were elected on 6 February 1946 at the First Session of the General Assembly, held in London. They convened for the first time in the Peace Palace, The Hague, on 3 April 1946. On 6 April 1946, the new Court elected its first President, Vice-President and Registrar. Its inaugural sitting took place on 18 April 1946.
