On Saturday, in a solemn ceremony held in the Congress building, Michelle Bachelet Jeria made history and became the first woman President of the Republic of Chile.(For greater clarity, please click th photo.)
Before more than 900 invited guests gathered in the Honor Salon of Congress, the new Head of State received the presidential sash from the president of the Senate, Eduardo Frei, and the badge of O’Higgins—the symbol of presidential power—from outgoing President Ricardo Lagos. The Ministers in Michelle Bachelet’s Cabinet were also formally sworn in.
